Water testing and analysis

Water samples are tested in our laboratory using several methods, depending on the physical and chemical properties to be determined.

Understanding your water

We test water hardness, pH, TDS, Silica, Chloride, Iron, Copper, Manganese, and trace metals. After analysis, we recommend the right water filter for your needs and equipment. Request a water testing kit to check your site or kitchen water quality. Return it in the free-post envelope for an analysis report and treatment advice.

Temporary Hardness

Temporary hardness, also known as carbonate hardness, is caused mainly by dissolved calcium and magnesium bicarbonates. When water is heated, these compounds can form insoluble carbonate deposits, creating limescale on boilers, heating elements, pipework and internal equipment components.

Temporary hardness is particularly important for appliances that heat or generate steam from water.

Indicative WaterCare guidelines:

  • Commercial coffee machines: approximately 80ppm as CaCO₃ may provide a useful balance between scale control and mineral content for extraction. The coffee-machine manufacturer’s requirements and desired beverage profile should always be checked.
  • Combi and steam ovens: generally below 40ppm as CaCO₃, subject to the oven manufacturer’s specification.
  • Commercial glasswashers and ice machines: generally below 20ppm as CaCO₃ where scale and mineral deposits must be closely controlled.

Temporary hardness may be estimated through acid titration using dilute sulphuric acid and a bromocresol-green/methyl-red indicator. Strictly, this test measures total alkalinity to a defined endpoint. In many natural waters, the result provides a useful approximation of carbonate hardness, but other alkaline compounds may affect the reading.
